Methodology

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures changes in the cost of goods and services purchased by Canadian consumers. It is produced by Statistics Canada.

The monthly data is not deseasonalized; it therefore measures fluctuations due to seasonal variations and various economic cycles.

The reference (or base) year is 2002; this means that changes are shown in relation to 2002, the year for which the CPI value is 100.

To take into account changes in the public’s purchasing and consumption habits, the contents of the basket of goods and services was updated in 2005.
